You Are a Product of Your Environment

Think about the moment you woke up this morning. You probably thought about the laundry list of things you personally had to get done. Oh, how invasive our thoughts can be. Maybe you work from home, maybe you have to pay your bills today, or maybe you want to find a relaxing spot to enjoy your coffee, journal, and read.

Do you have a spot in your home where you go to sit and do these things? How productive are you there? Do you feel like you can get things done in your house, or are you constantly running off to a coffee shop or restaurant with good wifi to sit and be productive in a new ambiance?

Something special I have been helping my clients with lately is how to become more productive in their own homes and in their own environments. Together, we build a space based on the desired ambiance, aesthetic, and feel that my clients want to create and have consistency within their home. Then, we make it happen (even when you think it’s impossible).

Now I get it … you don’t have an extra room for an office space, or you just think there is no hope for your home. I’ve heard all the excuses already, trust me. Sure, setting up an individual space for an office would be ideal however, most people don’t have that type of space. The next best thing you can do is make a spot in your home double as a two-for-one. And guess what? This really does work! I have some clients that set up a cute little cabinet with organizing bins in their dining room for example. This cabinet sits in their dining room but doubles as the place where they get work done.

The thing is, you can use a room, an entryway, or even a closet to cultivate a space for your needs. You just have to think creatively and be open minded to the process. When we have a place that is organized and aesthetically pleasing to just walk up to and start moving and grooving, our productivity naturally goes up and we don’t have to leave the house to do that.

Now, for those of you that do have a space for an office, that you’re able to close up for the day, shut the door, and go about other tasks, you still have to create the space intentionally. Having an office is so rewarding. You may start by finding the perfect desk and a complementary chair that is also comfortable for your body. Next, you might find a filing cabinet to put on the wall because you don't like clutter and opt for the more minimal aesthetic.

Whether less is more or more is best for you, it’s important to note this in your day to day.

Personally, what I have found in my own home is that I am more productive with less “stuff.” I like to be able to dress my hutches and dining room table, but all in all,  less is more. I find myself being more productive because I know that I have less to pick up and more mental capacity to focus on the things that actually need my attention. From owning a business, to running the girls around, and getting the laundry done, when I have fewer items in my home I am 100% more productive.
